Part I - Parapente en Himalaya : Mode d'emploi ? 🌄🔑
English below
🎬 Acte 3 : Annapurna, on t'aura !
Il me fascine.

🇬🇧🎬 "My decision has been made.
It dates back to 2008. The previous year, we had a blast with Martial for 9 days opening the 'voie des papas' on the mythical collapsed west face of the Drus.
🔦 Being in the spotlight, the illustrious Jean Troillet and his main sponsor Rolex had invited us to climb the south face of Annapurna! Fueled by a tremendous desire to climb, I had forgotten my own passions and games.
😥 It was my worst regret. 55 days at base camp watching the snow accumulate on the mountain. No violin, no paragliding to occupy, escape, or have fun.
👉 Returning from this first experience on an 8000m peak, my decision was made. Never again would I go to the Himalayas without my own toys.
🎬 Act 1: 2009, a violin at Shishapangma
We're back in the Himalayas with Jean. Just the two of us this time, in Tibet. Friendship had bitten us the previous year. It only begged to flourish.
The base camp of the south face is at 5400m altitude, not far from the Nepalese border but entirely in Tibetan territory, on the famous and sublime desert plateaus. Acclimatization is great on surrounding welcoming small peaks (at 6000m and above) with breathtaking views to the north of giant lakes as far as the eye can see.
🎻 Life at base camp is peaceful between violin facing the Himalayan giant and invitations from other expeditions. And yes, I climb with a legend.
Only one "hiccup": indeed, I'm already passionate about paragliding and it's well hidden at the bottom of my tent. I haven't mentioned it to Jean or even to the local authorities. Moreover, the wind in the region and at this altitude leaves me perplexed. I don't understand it at all, and even if I managed to get airborne, what would happen when landing at 5400m?
I realize that my technique is insufficient as well as the confidence and experience needed to play up there!
⛺️ Well, for this first attempt at paragliding in the Himalayas, the cloth will definitely remain folded at the bottom of my tent!
PS: On the climbing side, after a good attempt pushed to over 7600m on Doug Scott's historic route in violent winds, the expedition will be aborted. The fatal fall of our friend Marco, an Italian comrade from a neighboring expedition, and the repatriation of his body, dampened our spirits.
🎬 Act 2: 2010, Morimoto or the Chinese slap
Only Jean, born in 1948 as a remember, can have ideas like that! The sponsors just dropped him. The budget is reduced to a minimum. No question of getting a permit on an 8000m, too expensive. No problem. We'll go through Nepal and steal it!!! 🤔
Off we go towards the deep Langtang valley which ends against the border. This time, a friend of Jean's accompanies us to base camp. Henri Louis: he's never set foot in the Himalayas! I can't believe it, we'll have to drag a city dweller! Eyes wide with Nepalese kindness, awestruck by the beauty in the snowy peaks, our brave Henri Louis rises up to 5500 meters. He delights in photographing me every morning as I take my little flight above base camp. This time, I'm seasoned. I'll fly a little higher and a little later every day until I tame the thermals and valley breeze.
⏰ Three weeks later, acclimatization is complete. The dice are cast. We inform our Nepali staff friends and Henri Louis of our departure for 7 days of mountain adventure up there. We have to be vague... when we want to climb in complete illegality!
It will be our big secret for over a decade. We stole Shisha (8021m) from the Chinese!
Our return to base camp is joyful. Jean returns to Kathmandu by helicopter. Personally, after such success in the mountains, I'll return in 3 days of bivouac flying. It's a revelation! I love the game of choosing decorations, flying, hiking, meeting people, and the satisfaction of advancing rapidly on the map of Nepal!
🎬 Act 3 : Annapurna, we'll get you!
Following our secret success on Shishapangma, we are pumped. This year, 2011, we set our sights on the Messner-Kammerlander on the northwest of Annapurna. Nothing less: the Mona Lisa of the Himalayas, the white and black of the adventurer, the requiem of the mountaineer.
The access to base camp is an adventure in itself. It avoids for several days an impenetrable canyon several kilometers long through jungle and a sharp ridge at 3500m on the edge of lush vegetation. I discover a wild and seemingly impenetrable Nepal. It fascinates me. I have no idea that I will make it my favorite playground in a few years...
📍 Arrived at base camp: Same story
During acclimatization, I shamelessly explore every day with my sail. I've tamed the landscapes. I devour the scenery paragliding.
Before our final assault, the idea is to sleep in the middle of the face. Another twisted idea from Jean, but the experience must be cool. Let's go! Arriving at 6000m, a band of black ice inclined at 70 degrees blocks our path. I insist on roping up and securing ourselves.
Ten minutes later, Jean is hanging on his ice screw, unconscious. He just had a stroke. (I won't learn about this until 8 days later when he's repatriated) For now, the priority is to save our skins and get out of there.
It will take me 3 days between storms and avalanches to get my friend down alive.
The whole camp will be evacuated by helicopter. On the last trip, the sky clouded over.
The pilot, very excited, orders me to abandon our rubbish and jump into the cabin. It's them or me! Well, it'll be me. I had anticipated it. To the astonished gaze of the pilot, I pull out my ready-to-go bivouac flying bag and bid him farewell. I return to Pokhara by flight, but without propeller or kerosene. To top it off, I begin this four-day adventure by flying over the famous canyon in the evening light.
🎬 Acts 4, 5, 6, and 7: Next week 😉

La suite! La suite!
Superbe aventure !!!!
